Using bus service is the best way to get from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho. From Ben Xe Mien Tay (South-West Bus Station) in Ho Chi Minh City, there are buses leaving daily and hourly to Can Tho. Depending on the traffic and weather conditions, the whole journey takes you approximately 3-4 hours, typically including a 15-minute break point for toilet, snack and shopping. There are 3-4 bus companies covering the route from Can Tho to Ho Chi Minh vice versa: Phuong Trang, Thanh Buoi and Mai Linh. These big operators also offer a departure point in the city center at Le Hong Phong Street, from which shuttle buses will bring travelers to South-West Bus Station. You can go to Le Hong Phong Street in district 10 by taxi or go straight to Mien Tay bus station in district 6. Look out for the office of Phuong Trang (red signs), Mai Linh (all green) or Thanh Buoi (white background logo with a flower). A taxi ride from district 1 costs less than $10. Most operators provide travelers with a small bottle of water included in the ticket price. As the bus does not stop for a 10-minute break on the way from Ho Chi Minh City, Thanh Buoi provides the fastest service to Can Tho City. Its ride takes you about half an hour for the day bus and 1 hour for the night bus. Free water and a small bun as a free snack are included in the price. Spanning over Hau River, this river connects Vinh Long province and Can Tho City in the Mekong Delta region in Vietnam. To get to Can Tho, renting a car from Ho Chi Minh City is the best choice for those who are traveling with family and friends as you can stop anywhere you like along the trip, just for buying local products, photos oppotunities, or simply taking a rest to drink coconut juice. Allow less than 4 hours from Ho Chi Minh City by car. For a one-way trip (or return trip in the same day) for 2-3 passengers from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho, car rental fare is US$140-180. Included in the price is a driver. Check well in advance about the conditions if you want to drive yourself.

Depending on your way of driving, you might be slightly faster by motorbike than by car. In the tourist area in District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City, you will have no difficulty renting a motorbike. If you can show a driving license of any country or will even not ask for a license at all, most rental stores will help you to rent a motorbike. Beware that only if your driving license is valid in Vietnam, you are covered by your insurance in case of an accident.
