Being a lot cheaper than hiring a car and more comfortable and safer than a bus or motorbike, traveling from Hanoi to Sapa by overnight train is a popular choice of most visitors.

Every night, at around 9pm to 10 pm, the train from Hanoi to Sapa leaves the Main Station of Hanoi and at around 5-6 am the next morning, it arrivea at Lao Cai train station. To travel the final 30 kilometers from Lao Cai to Sapa, you can choose to go by taxi (350,000 VND), minibus (50,000 – 60,000 VND) or private transfer. In the return direction, trains even have numbers. For the return journey, you can get on SP8 at19:40, SP2 at 20:35 and SP4 at 21:10. At about 17:00, you will get on buses leaving Sapa from near the church.

Although there have been no reported serious accidents on that particular route, if you cannot get booked on the train or want a cheaper option, the bus is an alternative but less comfortable and less safe. Express Hanoi to Sapa bus or sleeper bus, are two available options. It will take you around 8-9 hours to go directly to Sapa town by sleeper bus. Hung Thanh and Hai Van are two popular sleeper buses to Sapa you can catch at My Dinh, Luong Yen or Gia Lam bus station. It costs around 250,000 – 350,000 VND per ticket per person. Or else, you can choose Hanoi – Sapa – Hanoi express bus which departs daily at 7 AM via the newly constructed Hanoi – Lao Cai highway. Depending on traffic and weather, it takes you about 6 hours of driving from Hanoi to Sapa. Not only being by far the easiest and quickest way to travel between Hanoi and Sapa, traveling by express bus, you can also admire the stunning view of the Vietnamese countryside along the road.

Finally, to get to Sapa, driving motorbike is possible. Because of your safety, it is not highly recommended to drive directly to Sapa from Hanoi. You can put your bike on the train then drive to admire awesome scenery around you if you want to visit Sapa by motorbike.
