Thap Ba Festival

Thap Ba Festival is an annual event organized in the site of Po Nagar Cham Towers from the 20th to the 23th of the 3rd month of a Lunar Year. Thap Ba Festival is the largest festival in this region organised to commemorate the female genie Ponagar, the Goddess that takes care of the well-being of the region.

The Po Nagar Festival is biggest religious festival in the region, is held at Po Nagar Tower which located on the hill near the mouth of Cai River, north of Nha Trang City. According to Cham legends, the Goddess had great contribution in establishing the homeland, maintaining the race, finding out the rice trees, protecting each generation and teaching people how to cultivate, etc. The Goddess of the Cham had become the Goddess of the Vietnamese inhabitants .The festival involves the singing and dancing to welcome people, stage performance and many fun games take place joyfully in the front of the main temple. Usually, because of the long procedure, the festival lasts for several days. The festival is divided into two parts: the Thay Y (clothes changing ceremony) on the 20th, and the Cau Cung ceremony on the 23rd. These are followed hy diverse forms of entertainment, including folk dancing, a flower-offering dance and traditional opera.

First of all, at the Thay Y on the 20th, old costumes and hat are removed from the statue of the Goddess. Then, people carefully wash it with a special lotion made of fragrant leaves before putting new costumes and hat on the statue. The next important part of the festival is carried out on the 23rd. At the Cau Cung ceremony, people worship the Goddess, admire her good acts and wish for a peaceful, rich and happy life for every inhabitant. After the rituals ceremony is Bong Dance (the dance like Champa dance), Offering Flower Dance and Boi Song performances held on front of the main temple. In the old day, there had been basket boats competition. Thap Ba Festival attracts not only many Vietnamese and Cham people, but also visitors and tourists from different parts of the country. At the festival, visitors will enjoy the Cham people’s traditional art performances including dances with fans, ceramics and the Apsara dances. Besides, some Cham’s cultural activities such as the brocading, making ceramic products will be also introduced. The organising board also prepared a 2,000 meter square camp for the visitors to sleep and rest.

Nha Trang’s largest traditional festival – Thap Ba Festival aims to strengthen and unite the Cham people as the Ponagar Tower is a place to worship Goddess Thien Y A Na – mother of the Cham community. The Festival is organized is solemnly carried out with the participation of leaders of the province, departments, and offices; representatives of religions and of local people.

Thap Ba Festival is regarded as one of the biggest festival in South Central and Central Highlands. It is also a must-enjoy festival on your trip to Nha Trang.
