The terraced fields in Sapa in Vietnam’s northern Lao Cai province have been put on the list of 30 most beautiful places in the world by Mother Nature and also entered in the Top 11 most beautiful terraced fields on earth according to the Touropia.

They are commonly found in the Muong Hoa valley between Sapa town and a range of mountains named Hoang Lien Son with the Fansipan peak, on a backdrop of thick bamboo woodlands. Local mountain people of different ethnic minorities including the H’Mong, Dao, Tay, Giay and Xa Pho have been carrying out the seemingly impossible for millennia: growing rice – which requires a flat surface like deltas and a lot of water – in mountain areas. Despite the poor nature condition of these frontier villages, terraced rice fields still yield abundant crops to feed the locals and serve as a stunning sight to admire. In April and May when crops are just cultivated, the green seems to dominate Sapa’s scenery with a perfect combination of light greens covering terraced fields and dark greens of mountains vegetation. However, it is in the period between late August and early September that terraced fields in Sapa showcase their most outstanding beauty featured by a golden yellow.
